This volume contains eight two-part keyboard pieces, arranged for violin and viola, selected from the 1722 notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. The movements are taken from the French Suites from within the notebook and are presented here in paired groups in order of increasing difficulty. The selected movements are ideal for students moving on from ViolaViva's First Steps Series and from the Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach (1725), 17 short two-part pieces arranged for violin and viola (VV 105).
The two notebooks presented by J. S. Bach to his second wife, the accomplished musician Anna Magdalena Wilcke, appear to be collections of music for family music making and instruction. The 1722 notebook contains music solely by J. S. Bach, while the 1725 notebook is a collection of music by Bach and his contemporaries. The title page of the first notebook is inscribed Clavier-Büchlein vor Anna Magdalena Bachin ANNO 1722, in Anna Magdalena's hand; the cover of the second notebook bears her name and the year 1725.
This edition was transcribed from the original manuscript source located in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Signatur Mus.ms. Bach P 224). The two parts fit well on violin and viola: all original keys have been retained, while every effort has been made to ensure that octave transpositions in the viola, where needed, always take into account the importance of melodic line and shape. In the Gavotte BWV 816 and in the Trio BWV 814, where the music is sometimes in three parts, care has been taken to retain as much of the original harmony as possible, not least through the inclusion of some carefully-chosen double stopping.
